Frequently asked questions

What's the penalty for filing a T2 late?

If your corporation owes tax, the CRA charges 5% of the unpaid tax, plus 1% for each full month the return is late, up to 12 months. Interest is charged on top. The penalty is based on unpaid tax, so a year with no tax owing usually has no late-filing penalty, but the return still has to be filed.

Can the penalty be bigger?

Yes. If the CRA sent a demand to file and already charged a late-filing penalty in any of the three previous years, the penalty is 10% of the unpaid tax plus 2% for each full month late, up to 20 months. That's why it pays to catch up before the CRA comes asking.

I don't have all my receipts. Can you still help?

Yes. Bank and credit card statements are usually enough to rebuild the books. We tell you if anything else is needed for a specific year.

How long does catching up take?

It depends on how many years and how many transactions. Once we have your statements, most single-year catch-ups are done in a few weeks. We give you a timeline on the call.

Can the CRA cancel penalties and interest?

Sometimes. The CRA may consider cancelling or waiving penalties and interest when the reason for filing or paying late was beyond your control. We can tell you if it's worth asking.

Once I'm caught up, can you keep me on track?

Yes. Many clients move to monthly bookkeeping in QuickBooks Online, so every year-end is quick and on time.
